Do I Have to Install the Vent Hose
Why airflow matters—and when a vent hose is essential for the OGO™ ORIGIN Compost Toilet.
If you’re setting up your OGO™ ORIGIN, one of the first questions that comes up is: Do I really need to install the vent hose? The answer depends on your setup—but in most cases, the vent hose is a must.
Here’s why.
It’s Not Just About Odor—It’s About Airflow
Venting plays a critical role in:
-
Reducing moisture inside the solids bin
-
Supplying oxygen for composting microbes
-
Preventing clumping, soggy waste, or slow breakdown
-
Maintaining a healthy, aerobic composting process
Skipping the vent hose can lead to poor performance and unwanted smells—especially in compact or humid environments.

What’s Included
Every OGO™ ORIGIN includes a 3-foot vent hose:
-
Outer diameter: 1.6825″
-
Hose end inner diameter: 1.6″ (fits perfectly over 1-1/4″ PVC)
-
Flexible PVC with wire reinforcement
-
Includes two moulded rubber hose ends
-
Tool-free, push-fit design
Can You Go Ventless
In some cases, yes—but only if:
-
Your space already has strong passive airflow
-
You’re in a dry, well-ventilated environment
-
You’re using the toilet infrequently
Even then, we recommend monitoring performance. If you notice moisture or odor, it’s time to add venting.
Boost Performance with a Charcoal Filter or High-CFM Fan
-
Charcoal filters help neutralize mild odors, especially in marine or humid setups.
-
The standard fan is quiet and efficient (4.3 CFM, 0.48Ah/day).
-
Need more airflow? Upgrade to our High-CFM Fan—ideal for enclosed cabinets, long hose runs, or tropical conditions.
Yes. You can switch the vent side to suit your space. The fan housing pops out and can be swapped to the opposite side. Use a flathead screwdriver if needed—we have a video to walk you through it.
Final Word
In most builds, venting is essential.
It’s what keeps your compost dry, balanced, and odour-free.
Use the included hose, trim it to fit, or extend it as needed—but don’t skip it.
